Daily Bible Study: Day Five- 2 Peter 2:9-11

Modern Gnosticism & The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read 2 Peter 2:1-11 at least twice.

2. Focus in on verses 9-11 and do the following:
  • Mark any key words/terms you find in verses 9-11. One example of a key word/term in verse 10, where Peter is describing the characteristics of the false teachers, is the word "self-willed." The word refers to being self-pleasing or arrogant.
  • Look up the meanings of the key words/terms you found in verses 9-11.
  • Mark key verbs/verbal phrases that you find in verses 9-11. One example of a key verb in verse 10 is the verb "despise". Peter is saying that these false teachers continually or diligently disdain or think little or nothing of authority whether that be the authority of Christ or of His apostles.

3. Read 2 Peter 2:9-11 in at least two different Bible translations. I appreciate the way the Good News Translation translates verse 10: "especially those who follow their filthy bodily lusts and despise God's authority. These false teachers are bold and arrogant, and show no respect for the glorious beings above; instead, they insult them. "

4. Read at least two commentaries on verses 9-11. I like what John Calvin wrote concerning verse 10: "For since God will punish all the wicked, how can they escape who abandon themselves like brute beasts to every kind of iniquity? To walk after the flesh, is to be given up to the flesh, like brute animals, who are not led by reason and judgment, but have the natural desire of their flesh as their chief guide. By the lust of uncleanness understand filthy and unbridled gratifications, when men, having cast away every virtuous feeling, and shaken off shame, are carried away into every uncleanness."

Modern Gnosticism & The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read 2 Peter 2:1-11 at least twice.

2. Focus in on verses 7-8 and do the following:
  • Mark key words/terms that you found in verses 7-8. One example of a key word in verse 7 is the word describing the behavior or conduct of the degernates in Sodom and Gomorrah. Peter describes their behavior as being sensual which is quite literally referring to filthy living.
  • Look up the meanings of the key words/terms you found in verse 7-8.
  • Mark key verbs/verbal phrases in verses 7-8 noticing whether they are past, present, or future tense.

3. Read 2 Peter 2:7-8 in at least two different Bible translations. The Holman Christian Standard Bible rightly translates "sensual conduct" as "unrestrained behavior."

4. Read at least two different commentaries on 2 Peter 2:7-8. I appreciate something that William Barclay said concerning Lot's situation in Sodom. Barclay said "No man need to be the slave of the environment in which he happens to find himself."

Daily Bible Study: Day Two- 2 Peter 2:3-4

Modern Gnosticism & The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read 2 Peter 2 all the way through at least once.

2. Read 2 Peter 2:1-11 through at least twice.

3. Focus in on verses 3-4 and do the following:
  • Mark any key words/terms that you find. One example of a key word in verse 3 is the word "idle". Peter is saying that judgement for false teachers was announced long before his writing but this judgement will not be delayed and will certainly not linger.
  • Look up the meanings of the key words/terms that you found in your reading of verses 3-4.
  • Mark any key verbs/verbal phrases noticing whether they are past, present, or future. One example of a key verbal phrase in verse 3 is the verbal phrase "will exploit". Peter is saying that false teachers will (in the future) use these true believers for personal gain whether for wealth or notoriety.

4. Read 2 Peter 2:3-4 in at least two different Bible translations.

5. Read at least two commentaries on verses 3-4. I like what John Gill said about verse 3 concerning the greed of the false teachers: "Which is generally a prevailing vice among false teachers, they having no other end in view than themselves; either to gain popular applause and vain glory, which they are always covetous of; or to amass riches to themselves, after which they have an insatiable desire:"

3. Read 2 Peter 2:1-11 through at least twice.

4. Focus in on verses 1-2 and do the following:

  • Look up the meanings key words/terms you found in verses 1-2. You might want to make your notes in a notebook.
  • Mark any key verbs/verbal phrases noticing whether they are past, present, or future tense. One example of a key verbal phrase in verse 1 is "will secretly introduce". Peter seems to be not only looking at the present but also looking into the future.

5. Read 2 Peter 2:1-2 in at least two different Bible translations. I like the way the Good News translation renders verse 1: "False prophets appeared in the past among the people, and in the same way false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them, and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction."

6. Read at least two commentaries on verses 1-2. I like how the Jamieson, Fausset, Brown commentary defines the word "heresies"- "self-chosen doctrines, not emanating from God (compare "will-worship,"

Daily Bible Study: Day Six- Titus 1:10-16

Modern Gnosticism & The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Application: How does the text apply to the Church and to the believer?

1. Read Titus 1:10-16 at least twice.

2. Read at least two commentaries on Titus 1:10-16. I appreciate what John Gill said about verse 11: "into which they creep; that is, whole families, whose principles they corrupt, whose faith they overthrow, and carry them away with their own errors; and therefore, since this was the case not of a single person, or of a few, but of whole families, it was high time to attempt to convince them, and stop their mouths, that they might proceed no further."

3. How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?

Study Questions:
  1. Do we have "many rebellious men, empty talkers and "deceivers" today? If so think of some examples.
  2. Must we be concerned today with false teaching upsetting our families? How can we stop it from happening?
  3. How can we make ourselves "sound in the faith"?
  4. Do we deny God by our deeds?

1. Read Titus 1 at least once.

2. Read Titus 1:10-16 at least twice.

3. Read Titus 1:10-16 in at least two different Bible translations. I appreciate how "The Message" renders verse 16: "They say they know God, but their actions speak louder than their words. They're real creeps, disobedient good-for-nothings. "

4. Look up the meanings of the words/terms you found in your reading from Day Four.

Study Questions:
  1. Who are "those of the circumscision"?
  2. Why is it so important to silence false teaching in verse 11?
  3. What does Paul mean by being "sound in the Faith"?
  4. What is the source of "myths" and "commandments" in verse 14?

2. Read Titus 1 all the way through at least once.

3. Read Titus 1:10-16 through at least twice.
  • Mark key words/terms that you find in your reading. An example of a key word in verse 10 would be "empty talkers". Empty talkers refers to individuals who speak things that are senseless, futile, vain, and mischievous.
  • Mark key verbs/verbal phrases noticing whether they are past, present, or future. One key verb is found in verse 11. It is the verb "upsetting" which is in the present tense thus being a continual action. These false teachers are continually creating turmoil and error in the homes of the believing community.

Daily Bible Study: Day Three- 2 Timothy 4:1-5

Modern Gnosticism & The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Application: How does the text apply to the Church and to the believer?

1. Read 2 Timothy 4:1-5 at least twice.

2. Read at least two commentaries on 2 Timothy 4:1-5. I appreciate what John Calvin writes concerning how there will those who will not endure sound doctrine: "When they will not endure sound doctrine This means that they will not only dislike and despise, but will even hate, sound doctrine; and he calls it “sound (or healthful) doctrine,” with reference to the effect produced, because it actually instructs to godliness. In the next verse he pronounces the same doctrine to be truth, and contrasts it with fables, that is, useless imaginations, by which the simplicity of the gospel is corrupted."

3. How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?

Study Questions:
  1. Do you think that Paul's call to Timothy to "preach the word" also goes out to the Church and to the believer?
  2. Has the "time" come that Paul refers to in verse 3?
  3. Do we find "ear ticklers" and an accumlation of teachers today? Provide some examples.
  4. What myth are people turning to today?

2. Read 2 Timothy 4:1-5 at least twice.

3. Read 2 Timothy 4:1-5 in at least two different Bible translations. I like how the Jerusalem Bible renders verse 3: "The time is sure to come when, far from being content with sound teaching, people will be avid for the latest novelty and collect themselves a whole series of teachers according to their own tastes."

4. Look up the meanings of the words/terms that you found in your reading from Day One.

Study Questions:
  1. What is Paul calling Timothy to do as he is preaching God's word (verse 2)?
  2. Are the ear ticklers going to come on the scene in the future or are they already there in their midst?
  3. What do you think Paul means by "myths" in verse 4?

1. Read the introduction to 2 Timothy in your study Bible.

2. Read 2 Timothy 4 all the way through at least once.

3. Read 2 Timothy 4:1-5 at least twice.
  • Mark any key words/terms that you find in your reading. An example of a key word in verse 2 would be the word "word." The Greek word for "word" is the word logos which refers to a statement, saying, or in this case to revelation. Paul is exhorting Timothy to preach the revelation or Word of God.
  • Mark key verbs/verbal phrases noticing whether they are past, present, or future. An example of a key verb in verse 2 is the verb "preach." The verb means to preach or proclaim the word of God now making a decisive choice to do so.

1. Read 1 Timothy 6:20-21 at least twice.

2. Read at least two different commentaries (including the commentary in a Study Bible) on 1 Timothy 6:20-21.

3. How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?

Study Questions:
  1. How can we guard "what has been entrusted to us?"
  2. How do we avoid "worldly chatter?"
  3. What kinds of present day examples can 1 Timothy 6: 20-21 address?

Observation: What do I see?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read 1 Timothy 6:20-21 at least twice

2. Read 1 Timothy 6:20-21 in at least two Bible translations. I like the way the Good News Translation renders verse 20: "Timothy, keep safe what has been entrusted to your care. Avoid the profane talk and foolish arguments of what some people wrongly call "Knowledge."

3. Look up the meanings of the key words/terms you found in your reading from Day Four.

Study Questions:
  1. What is the "what" in verse 20?
  2. Is Paul saying in verse 20 that we should not defend the Christian Faith against false teachers?

Daily Bible Study: Day Three- 1 Timothy 6:3-5

Modern Gnosticism & The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Application: How does the text apply to the Church and to the believer?

1. Read 1 Timothy 6:3-5 at least twice.

2. Read at least two commentaries on 1 Timothy 6:3-5. I appreciate what the People's New Testament says about verse 3-5: "If any man teach otherwise. Teach new doctrines or duties which differ from the doctrine of Christ. See 1:3, 4. 4. He is proud. The idea is that he is blinded with pride, so that he really knows nothing. Doting. Morbidly dwelling upon foolish questions. He no doubt refers to foolish disputes which had been sprung upon the church by heretical teachers. 5. Thinking that gain is godliness. Men who have come into the church for gain and think that godliness is a source of gain."

3. How does the text apply to the Church and to the believer? I would normally try to come up with some questions at this point but I would rather encourage you to really think about the above question. Try to think about some possible scenarios in our own church and consider how this text tells us how to view the scenarios.

1. Read 1 Timothy 6 at least once (To get the full context).

2. Read 1 Timothy 6:3-5 at least twice.

3. Read 1 Timothy 6:3-5 in at least two different Bible translations. I appreciate how the Holman Christian Standard Bible translates verse 4 & 5: "he is conceited, understanding nothing, but having a sick interest in disputes and arguments over words. From these come envy, quarreling, slanders, evil suspicions, and constant disagreement among men whose minds are depraved and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way to material gain." If you don't have a copy of the Holman Christian Standard Bible I would encourage you to purchase one. It is a good translation for both indepth study and devotional reading. You can find them for lest than $20.00 at Lifeway Christian Stores- My Shameless Plug.

4. Find the meanings of the words/terms that you found in your readings from Day One.

Questions To Think About:
  1. Did the apostles teach the "words" of Christ?
  2. What does Paul say is the character of those who "advocate a different doctrine?"
  3. According to the apostle Paul what are the 5 characteristics that follow interest in controversy & disputes?
  4. What is the condition of the minds of the men who commit themselves to controversy and disputes?

Daily Bible Study: Day One- 1 Timothy 6:3-5

Modern Gnosticism & The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?

1. Read 1 Timothy 6 at least once.

2. Read 1 Timothy 6:3-5 at least twice.
  • Mark key words/terms. One example of a key word in verse 3 would be "sound doctrine." Sound doctrine refers to teaching that is in good health; teaching that is free from a mixture of error. Any doctrine or teaching that is not biblical or in accordance with Scripture is unsound doctrine.
  • Mark key verbs/verbal phrases noticing whether they are past, present, or future. One example of a key verbal phrase is found in verse 5. "Deprived of the truth" is in the perfect tense which means that not only are these false teachers and false believers robbed and defrauded of truth but this action has lingering effects and leaves ongoing results.

Application: How does the text apply to the Church and to the believer?

1. Read 1 Timothy 4:1-5 at least twice.

2. Read at least two commentaries on 1 Timothy 4:1-5. Concerning verse 1 John Calvin said "Here Paul, therefore, in the person of Timothy, forewarns not only the Ephesians, but all the churches throughout the world, about hypocritical teachers, who, by setting up false worship, and by ensnaring consciences with new laws, adulterate the true worship of God, and corrupt the pure doctrine of faith. This is the real object of the passage, which it is especially necessary to remark."

Questions to Think On:
  1. What are some examples of verse 1 taking place today?
  2. Does verse 3 point to some sort of legalism?
  3. Does this text point to "doctrinal tolerance?"

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read 1 Timothy 4 at least twice.

3. Look up the meanings of the key words/terms that you found in your reading from Day Four.

Questions to Ponder:
  1. In verse 1 does Paul's references to "deceitful spirits" and "doctrines of demons" refer to general false teaching or to something more specific?
  2. Where do you think Paul would draw the line in verse 4?

Friday, July 13, 2007

1. Read 1 Timothy 1 at least twice. Notice who, what, when, why, where, and how.

2. Read 1 Timothy 1:3-6 in at least two different Bible translations other than the one you normally study from. I appreciate the way the Good News Translation translates verse 4: "Tell them to give up those legends and those long lists of ancestors, which only produce arguments; they do not serve God's plan, which is known by faith. "

3. Look up the meanings of the key words/terms that you found in your reading from Day One.

Daily Bible Study: Day One- 1 Timothy 1:3-6

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?

1. Read the introduction in a study Bible to Paul's first letter to Timothy.

2. Read all of chapter 1 at least twice.
  • Mark key words/terms as you read verses 3-6. An example of a key term in verse 3 is "strange teaching" which refers to doctrines that deviate from the truth. These are doctrines that are contrary to the doctrine of Paul and the other apostles.
  • Mark key verbs/verbal phrases. An example of a key verb in verse 4 would be "nor pay attention." This verb is a present tense verb which conveys continuous & habitual action. They were instructed to never pay attention to "myths and endless geneologies."

3. Paul is writing this letter to Timothy who is minstering in the city of Ephesus. Whenever you find a city or a place in your reading it becomes important to not only take notice but also examine some significant facts about that city or place. This can help in better understanding the original readers and their social context.

Daily Bible Study: Day Six- Colossians 2:8-9

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Application: How does the text apply to the Church and to the believer?

1. Read through Colossians 2:8-9 at least twice.

2. Read two commentaries on the text.

3. How does this passage apply to the Church and to the believer?

Questions to Ponder:
  1. How would verse 9 be effective with Jehovah Witnesses or Mormons?
  2. How would Colossians 2:8-9 apply in the following scenario?
  • You begin to build a friendship with someone in the workplace who you think might be a believer because of some of the things they say concerning God, Christ, Salvation and the Scripture. Eventually you ask them if they have trusted Christ for salvation and they reply that they certainly have. But later you begin to hear things that just don't seem to jive with what you believe the Bible teaches. They begin to start saying that God has been speaking to them when they are in some sort of "spiritual trance." Or maybe they begin telling you that they believe that most of the Scripture is nothing more than myth and legend. What does this text say to such a case?

Daily Bible Study: Day Five- Colossians 2:8-9

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read Colossians 2:8-9 at least twice.

2. Read Colossians 2:8-9 in at least two different Bible translations. I appreciate the way the NIV translates verse 8 "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ."

3. Look up the meanings of the key words/terms you found in your reading from Day Four.

The Daily Bible Study: Day Four- Colossians 2:8-10

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see?

1. Read the introduction to Paul's letter to the Colossians in your Study Bible concentrating on the theme of the letter.

  • I also want to encourage you to read through the whole letter in one sitting.

2. Read through all of chapter two at least twice focusing on Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How.

  • In verses 8-10 mark any key words or terms. One example of a key word in verse 8 would be the word "philosophy" which simply refers to the love of wisdom. Colossians 2:8 has been a much misapplied verse used as a reason to neglect the study of philosophy and to consider the subject as evil. Is this the point Paul is making in this verse? Is Paul talking about all of philosophy as being bad or is he referring to a specific type of philosophy?
  • Also mark key verbs and verbal phrases noticing whether they are past, present or future tense.

Daily Bible Study: Day Three- Ephesians 4:11-15

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Application: How does the text apply to the Church and to the believer?

1. Read Ephesians 4:11-15 through at least twice.

2. Read Ephesians 4:11-15 in at least two different commentaries. I appreciate what John Calvin said concerning verse 14:

"Tossed to and fro, and carried about. The distressing hesitation of those who do not place absolute reliance on the word of the Lord, is illustrated by two striking metaphors. The first is taken from small ships, exposed to the fury of the billows in the open sea, holding no fixed course, guided neither by skill nor design, but hurried along by the violence of the tempest. The next is taken from straws, or other light substances, which are carried hither and thither as the wind drives them, and often in opposite directions. Such must be the changeable and unsteady character of all who do not rest on the foundation of God’s eternal truth. It is their just punishment for looking, not to God, but to men. Paul declares, on the other hand, that faith, which rests on the word of God, stands unshaken against all the attacks of Satan."

3. How does this passage apply to the Church and to the believer?

Questions to ponder:
  • According to this text why is it essential to grow in Christian maturity?
  • Can we truly be united doctrinally? If so how?
  • Can continual immaturity lead to false teaching?

Daily Bible Study: Day Two- Ephesians 4:11-15

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read Ephesians 4:11-15 through at least twice.

2. Read Ephesians 4:11-15 through in at least two different translations. I really like the way the Holman Christian Standard Bible translated verse 14 "Then we will no longer be little children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of teaching, by human cunning with cleverness in the techniques of deceit."

3. Find the meanings of the words/terms you found in your reading from Day One.

Daily Bible Study: Day One- Ephesians 4:11-15

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?

1. Read through all of chapter 4 at least twice.

2. Read through verses 11-15 at least twice.
  • While reading somehow mark key words/terms. For example in verse 13 a key word is the word "knowledge" which refers to real knowledge or true knowledge as opposed to the false knowledge of false teaching.
  • While reading also mark key verbs or verbal phrases. For example in verse 14 Paul uses the verb "carried about" which refers to being in doubt and hesitation; to be lead away to another view or opinion.

Questions to consider:

  1. In verse 14 Paul states "As a result" (your translation might be different). As a result of what?
  2. Who equips the saints in verse 12?

The Not So Daily Bible Study: Day Six- 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Application: How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?

1. Read 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 in at least two different Bible translations.

2. How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?

Questions to consider:
  1. Is this battle that Paul is describing a battle of ideas or is it a battle against demonic forces?
  2. How can this text apply to a believer who is witnessing to a New Age believer at work?

The Not So Daily Bible Study: Day Five- 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read 2 Corinthians 10 at least two times.

2. Look up the meanings of the words/terms you found in your reading from day four.

3. Read two commentaries on the given text. It is sometimes (if you can find them) a good thing to read commentaries with different perspectives of the text. This will help you sharpen your interpretative skill as you seek to figure out which interpretation makes the most sense of the text.

Question to consider:

  • What do you think Paul means by "taking every thought captive to obey Christ?"

The Not So Daily Bible Study: Day Four- 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?

1. Read all of 2 Corinthians 10 at least twice.
  • As you read ask who, what, when, why, where, and how.

2. Somehow mark key words/terms that you find in the text. An example of a key word in the text would be the word "strongholds." "Strongholds" (some translations use fortresses) refers to arguments that form a sort of fortification that is raised up against the knowledge of God.

3. Mark key verbs/verbal phrases taking note of what tense they are in- past, present, or future. An example would be the verb "destroy" which is a present tense verb. Paul says that believers destroy arguments that stand as a barrier between people and the knowledge of God.

4. Consider this question...

  • Does this passage provide believers with an apologetic (a defense of the Faith) imperative?

The Not So Daily Bible Study: Day Three- Romans 16:17-19

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Application: How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?

1. Read Romans 16:17-27 at least twice.

2. Read the text through in at least two different translations.

3. How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?

Questions to consider:
  1. Is Paul talking about just false teachers and not someone who holds to false teaching?
  2. What is the doctrine we have been taught?
  3. Do you think Paul is calling for outright removal or is he saying to just ignore theses false so-called brethren?

Thursday, June 21, 2007

The Not So Daily Bible Study: Day Two- Romans 16:17-19

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read through the text at least twice.

2. Find the meanings of the key words/terms that you found in your reading from Day One.

3. Read at least two different commentaries on the text.

4. Paul has not mentioned any false teaching anywhere else in this epistle to the Romans so why would he mention this warning at this point?

5. Read Revelation 2:14-16, 20-25. What happened in Pergamum and Thyatira?

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

The Not So Daily Bible Study: Day One- Romans 16:17-19

The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Obervation: What do I see in the text?

1. Read through the text at least twice. Recognize who, what, when, why, where and how.

2. Somehow mark key words/terms in the text.
  • An example of a key word in verse 17 is the word "obstacle." The word "obstacle" is the word "scandolon" (from where we get our word "scandal") in the Greek New Testament. It refers to a trap, a snare or something placed in someone's path causing them to stumble. False teaching places before us an obstacle between true believers and biblical doctrine.

3. Somehow mark key verbs/verbal phrases taking note of whether they are past, present, or future. For example notice the verbal phrase in verse 19. Pauls says that he wants these believers "to be wise." This verbal phrase is not only present but it also a future imperative. They are to be wise continually in "what is good and innocent in what is evil."

Daily Bible Study: Day Four- 1 John 4:1-6, 15

Ancient Gnosticism and The Biblical Content

Observation: What do I see in the text?

1. Read all of chapter 4 at least twice making mental notes of Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How.

2. Read 1 John 4:1-6, 15 through at least twice.
  • While reading somehow mark the key word/terms. For example in verse 1 the term "spirit(s)" would be a key term. Spirit(s) refers to the doctrine or teaching that is presented by teachers who believe in their own minds that they are teaching what God would have them to teach but yet this "doctrine" is not in accordance with the Word of God.
  • Mark key verbs or verbal phrases that might be important in understanding the meaning of the text. For example in verse 1 the apostle John uses the verb "test." "Test" is in the present imperatve tense in the Greek New Testament. John is saying that these believers are to make "testing the spirits" not only a habit or lifestyle but also an action carried out whenever the occasion arises. The word "test" refers to examination, proving and scrutinizing. In other words we are to always examine and evaluate everything we hear in light of God's Word.

2. Read at least two different commentaries on the passage.

3. How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?

**How would you respond to these questions?
  1. I sin all the time. Are these verses saying that I cannot have a relationship with God because I sin?
  2. I have "brothers" in Christ that I don't like very much. Is verse 10 telling me that because I don't like my brother that I am not "of God?"

1. Read all of chapter 3 at least twice making mental notes of Who, What, When, Why, and How.

2. Read 1 John 3:4-10 through at least twice.
  • While you read the text somehow mark the key words/terms. For example in verse 4 a key word/term would be "lawlessness" which refers to "the condition without law" and "contempt and violation of law; iniquity and wickedness." Lawlessness was exactly what these false teachers were committed to.
  • Mark verbs or verbal phrases that might be important in understanding the meaning of the text. For example in verse 4 the verb "practices" would be important to note. It refers to an habitual lifestyle of lawlessness.

Interpretation: What does it mean?

1. Read through 1 John 2 at least once.

2. Read through 1 John 2:18-24 at least twice.
**I realize the repetition is "repetitious" but the more a text is read the better it is understood.

3. Look up the meaning of the words/terms that you found in your reading from Day Four. When looking up your words you can use the same directions from Day Two.

4. At this point you can begin to answer the question "What does it mean?" Tomorrow we will look at some commentary on the text.

Daily Bible Study: Day Four- 1 John 2:18-24

*Let me reiterate that these passages covered in the daily Bible study will be the passages covered in Sunday school.

Observation: What do I see?

1. Read all of chapter two at least twice making mental notes of Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How.

2. Read 1 John 2:18-24 at least twice.
  • While your read the text somehow mark the key words/terms. For example in verse 18 a key word would be antichrist(s) being used twice. What John says in verse 18 sets the theme for verses 18-24.
  • Somehow mark verbs and verbal phrases that might be important in understanding the meaning of the text. For example in verse 22 John uses the verb "denies" which is in the present tense. This is important because it refers to a continuous or habitual denial of Jesus Christ as the God-Man.

Prayer Requests for Sunday 5/20

  1. Derik & Mandy: strike at Pantex; brother & sister-in-law; cousins Matt & Josh (military-headed for Iraq)
  2. VBS: preparation; passing out of the flyers- If anyone wants to help with this let me know.

**If I forgot any please post them as a comment. Thanks.

Daily Bible Study: Day Three- 1 John 1:5-10

* Tomorrow we will begin our study of 1 John 2:18-24

Interpretation: What does it mean?
Application: How does it work?

1. Read through 1 John 1:5-10 at least twice.

2. Look over your findings from Day Two and try to answer the question "What does it mean?"

3. Read at least 2 different commentaries on the text. You can follow the same directions that were provided for Day Two for searching on the "Search God's Word" sight. A listing of commentary and notes on the text will be located to the right of the passage. If you have a study Bible you might read over the notes for these verses.
  • The reading of commentary should either follow our own study of the text or perhaps when we are having trouble understanding a passage. Believers will never learn how to study the Scriptures for themselves if they are always dependent upon commentary prior to their own reading and study of a text or texts.

4. Now that Observation and Interpretation have taken place it is time to apply the text. Try to answer "How does this text work?" or "How does it apply to the Church and to me as a believer?"

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Daily Bible Study: Day Two- 1 John 1:5-10

Observation: What do I see?
Interpretation: What does it mean?

1. Read 1 John 1:5-10 through at least twice.
  • Underline key words/terms- What is the most important word/term in this verse? For example in verse 5 "message" is a key word/term.
  • Mark the verbs (underline, put between parenthesis, etc.) or verbal phrases that might be important in understanding the meaning of the text. For example in verse 5 the verb "have heard" is past tense. This is important because this tells us that the "message" that John and the other apostles received happened at a designated time in the past. Notice whether they are past, present, or future tense.

2. Look up the meaning of the words/terms that you found in your reading of the text. Two of the best places for online Bible study are found at Crosswalk.com and Search God's Word. Here are some directions that will help you look up the meanings of words/terms in the text.

  1. Go to Search God's Word.
  2. When on the home page type in your text in the "Search For" box. Do not press "Peform Search" yet.
  3. Click on the down arrow beside the "Translation" box. Select "NAS with Strong's Numbers" and Click "Peform Search."
  4. You will notice that some of the words in the text are underlined. These are the words that are connected to the Strong's Hebrew and Greek Dictionary. If one of your key words/terms are underlined you can click on the word and it will take you to the definition page.

Additional Notes:

  • These directions should also apply in using the Crosswalk.com site.
  • Both of these sites are linked to the blog.
  • If you are interested in downloading some great Bible Study (A lot of good stuff is FREE!) tools that you can use on your computer without using the internet go to E Sword.

Daily Bible Study: Day One- 1 John 1:5-10

In order to provide a way to prepare for our study on Sunday I want to offer a daily Bible study that you can work through during the week. This will not only help you to grow in your Bible study skills but it will also enhance your participation in class (Of course you all do a great job of this anyway). If you ever have any questions on this please feel free to email me at contender9876@aol.com.

Observation: What do I see?

1. Read the introduction to 1 John in a study Bible, a reference Bible or online at http://bible.crosswalk.com/Dictionaries/EastonsBibleDictionary/ebd.cgi?number=T2089 or http://bible.crosswalk.com/Dictionaries/SmithsBibleDictionary/smt.cgi?number=T2455

2. Read the first chapter of 1 John in order to gain a better understanding of the whole chapter.

3. I would encourage you to read the whole letter but this is optional. **Remeber to ask the 5 W's and an H: Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How.

Concluding The Ancient Gnostic Worldview

I would like to get started this Sunday looking at some passages from 1 John that provide us with an example of early Gnostic teaching in the New Testament. In order to do that we must finish up the Ancient Gnostic Worldview focusing in on the Ancient Gnostic View of Humanity. Last week we looked at their view of Morality. What I will do is go point by point through the outline here on the blog so you can still fill in your blanks and Sunday we will start looking at those passages in 1 John. Here is a look at the Ancient Gnostic View of Humanity.

5. The Ancient Gnostic View of Humanity
  • Human beings are divine sparks trapped in a body: What this is saying is that human beings are ultimately good. We are essentially divine in that we are not corrupt or depraved. We are little incarnations of divinity. We have within ourselves a purely divine nature and are not in anyway sinful. Or course this contrary to the teaching of Scripture. See Romans 3:23; Psalm 51:5; Genesis 6:11; Mark 7:21; Ephesians 5:8; Jeremiah 17:9; Ecclesiastes 7:20; Ephesians 2:1-3

“Your god who is within you and […] [35] have provoked you to anger [within] your souls. [Let] any one of you who is [strong enough] among human beings bring out the perfect human and stand before my face.” Taken from the gnostic Gospel of Judas

  • Human beings have evil bodies: Why would this be the case? If our bodies are physical which god in their minds is responsible for this physical body? The evil god who created the physical universe is responsible. Therefore whatever is created by the evil god must itself be evil. How does this measure with Scripture? Did the true God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob not create the physical universe and call it good? Despite the fact that the physical universe has been corrupted by sin God will still redeem it at the consummation of the age (see Genesis 1:31; Romans 8:19-21; Revelation 21:1).
  • Human beings are ignorant: The idea here is that human beings are ignorant of our origins and our condition as essentially divine beings caught in the prison of the body. We need a mystical, subjective, experiential knowledge or gnosis to enlighten us as to who we really are. With this so-called “knowledge” or enlightenment we can break through not only the bondage of our own existence but we can also break through to “god.”

Here are some quotes to illustrate the point:

“To the extent that we see Christianity as a means of securing self- awareness & psychic well-being through learning secrets, we more resemble the ancient gnostics than Christians.” Michael Horton

“Rather, the kingdom is inside you and outside you. When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty, and embody poverty.” Taken from the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas. **Sounds a little like Oprah.

  • Human beings need “special knowledge” to break through to god: We’ve already dealt with this point.

I have two quotes that I want to share with you Sunday morning but I will close this section with the following quote:

“Shirley MacLaine allies herself with Oriental thinking. Just as oriental thinking believed in the superiority of spirit over matter, so Western New Age thinking believes that, by the use of mental and spiritual powers, human beings can dominate the limitations that the physical imposes upon them and thus create themselves.” Peter Jones

Combating The Ancient Gnostic Worldview- The Church Father Irenaeus

This is a lecture that Dr. Steve Lawson gave concerning the life and ministry of Irenaeus, one of our early Church Fathers. Irenaeus spent a large part of his ministry combating Ancient Gnosticism thus providing the Church today an excellent testimony of how Christians must defend the Christian Faith in their own historical context.

**Dr. Steve Lawson will be our speaker for the Bible Conference this fall as explained in this week's Cornerstone Connection.

Here Is A Look At What We've Covered The Last Couple of Sundays 4/28 & 5/6

  • We have been looking at the Ancient Gnostic View of Knowledge discovering that their view of knowledge is very subjective, mystical, relative, and is not based upon the revelation of God (God's Word) but rather upon their own futile self made revelations. After finishing what they believed about knowledge we began looking at examples from the Scriptures where false prophets and teachers appeard teaching there own self made revelations that were dreamed up from within their own degenerate minds.
  • Tomorrow morning we will finish looking at Jeremiah 23:32 & Jeremiah 29:8. We will also finish the Ancient Gnostic Worldview and hopefully have some time to examine the passages in 1 John that provide us with a picture of early Gnosticism.

Here Is A Look At What We Are Covering Sunday 5/6

  • We will continue our look at the Ancient Gnostic Worldview and the Modern Manifestations focusing on their view of Knowledge, Morality and Humanity. When looking at their view of Knowledge we will examine the following passages: Jeremiah 14:14; Jeremiah 23:27, 32; Jeremiah 29:8 (We covered Jude 8 and Deuteronomy 13:1-5 last week).
  • If we have time we will at least begin another look at Ancient Gnosticism and the Biblical Content: 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:18-24; 1 John 3:4-10; 1 John 4:1-6, 15; 1 John 5:1, 5-12, 18-20; 2 John 7-11

Further Commentary on Jude 8 and Deuteronomy 13:1-5

My motive behind our examination of these passages is to provide us with a biblical view of this idea of mystical, subjective, hidden dreamlike revelations that find their origins from within the minds of sinful man. This is exactly the character of the gnostic heresy and of all heresies- their views are based on self revealed notions that are totally contrary to God’s revealed Word.

1. Text: Jude 8
Here is a quote concerning this verse from one of the early Church Fathers:

“It is worth noting there that Jude does not spare us the details of these people’s sin, which he attributes to the fact that they are deluded by a kind of dreaming. Those who do such things have lost their powers of reason and act as if they were sleepwalkers, stumbling from one thing to another.”

*Jude begins this verse by saying “Yet in the same manner as these men…” He is saying that these false teachers (early gnostics) were living out the example set by those he mentions in verses 5-7. Jude mentions three examples. First he mentions the example of the unbelievers who rejected the LORD after He had graciously brought them out of Egypt. Second, in verse 6 Jude describes the fall of Satan and his demons because of their rebellion. Third, he writes of Sodom and Gomorrah’s immorality. Again, the false teachers that Jude is warning the churches against are living out these three examples.

*Jude then describes some characteristics of those false teachers. He says that by their dreaming they do three things: Dreaming here in this context refers to the idea of becoming irrational and foolish rejecting all fear and reverence. “Dreaming” or “dreams” could also refer to these false revelations that they are spreading in the Church.

First, they defile the flesh. As I stated in the lesson this refers to outright immorality that is probably sexual in nature.

Second, they reject authority. I believe that this is a reference to them rejecting the authority of Jesus Christ Himself. This of course would go along with their view that Christ is not the God-Man.

Third, they reviled angelic majesties. This was basically a rejection of the demonic power over not only their lives but also their false doctrine.

From this text we see the character of false teachers both ancient or modern who base their ideas upon their own self delusion.

2. Text: Deuteronomy 13:1-5

Looking at the preceding context of these verses we find God warning His people to not follow the pagan practices of those nations that He, by His sovereign grace, kicked out of the land of which He had given to His elect people. He not only demands the elect’s complete obedience but He also warns them of false prophets and how they must reject such men and wait and watch the false prophet’s demise.

First, in verses 1 through 3, the LORD tells His people that if dreamers or prophets appear performing signs and wonders that they think provide evidence for their false gods and the need for the people’s proper worship the elect are not to listen to such doctrine. The word “listen” refers to not only hearing with one’s ears but the word also refers to living out what one “listens” to. The LORD basically tells them not to listen with action.

Why is the LORD allowing this to happen? Verse 3 says the LORD their God is testing His people to see if they truly love Him and Him alone.

Second, we find the counter-cultural imperative. God tells His people to listen and live out His commandments and His revelation through His mediating prophets who carry the true Word of God. They are to worship and serve the Sovereign God alone.

Third, what is to happen with these false prophets and dreamers that seek to lead God’s people astray? Verse 5 instructs His elect to put these individuals to death and purge (remove their influence) these false teachers from their community.

What application can we draw from these verses? One, look out for those who are self-proclaimed revelators or messengers of their own mindless created “revelations” that are not based upon the Word of God. Two, what we accept to be true whether it is biblical teaching and instruction or heretical teaching, they both produce a view of the world lived out either leading to glory or to destruction. Three, we do not necessarily work to put today’s false prophets and teachers to death but we can stress at least two important points. One, we cannot tolerate false teaching in our homes or in the Church. Two, God takes such venomous doctrine extremely serious therefore we should do so as well.

What We Covered Last Sunday 4/28

  • We started our look at the Ancient Gnostic View of Knowledge. We looked at how they saw knowledge (gnosis) as being hidden, revealed by enlightened messengers, mystical, individualistic and purely subjective (verses objective), and truth being relative.
  • We heard quotes from both the early Church Fathers (defenders of the Faith) and some modern day defenders. I will list some of these at the end of this posting.
  • We examined Jude 8 and Deuteronomy 13:1-5. I will provide further commentary on these texts later on.

The Church Fathers' Response to Gnosticism:

  • "Indeed, take away from the heretics(Gnostics) the wisdom that they share with the pagans, and let them support their inquiries from the Scripture alone. They will then be unable to hold their ground." Tertullian
  • ”We call those heretics “empty” for they are destitute of the counsels of God and of the traditions of Christ. Their dogmas originate with themselves and are therefore bitter- like the wild almond.” Clement of Alexandria
  • “The heretics insist that the apostles did not reveal everything to all men. Rather, they say that the apostles proclaimed some things openly and to all the world, but that they disclosed other things only in secret and to a few.” Tertullian

The Modern Gnostic Manifestations:

  • “Gnosticism is experiencing something of a revival, despite its historical status within Christianity as a vanquished Christian heresy.” Doug Groothius
  • “The perennial war of ideas develops few new weapons systems. In the intellectual combat between the New Age movement and orthodox Christianity, the points of conflict were recognized by the early church(in the Gnostic heresy) eighteen hundred years before New Age celebrity evangelist Shirley MacLaine spoke to her first disembodied spirit.” Doug Groothuis
  • Michael Horton agreeing with Harold Bloom that “The American religion, regardless of the denominational label, is Gnosticism. It is not merely a New Age or left-leaning phenomenon. It is swallowing the culture whole, and with it, much of modern Christianity.”

Articles on Gnosticism Both Ancient and Modern

1. This article comes from the Holman Bible Dictionary entry on Gnosticism. By the way if you can ever pick up the Holman Bible Dictionary it would be a great resource.

2. The New GnosticismIs It "The Age of the Spirit" or "The Spirit of the Age?" by Michael Horton- This is a long article but if you were only able to read through the 9 characteristics of Old Gnosticism and some of the section on the New Gnosticism it would be greatly beneficial.

3. Gnosticism defined on the online Theological Dictionary.

A Review of What We Covered Sunday 4/22

  • We finished the Ancient Gnostic view of God and Reality. Concerning the Ancient Gnostic view of God the main thing to know is that ancient gnosticism believed in an unknowable, impersonal (no relationship) God that is so separate and protected from creation that only through special knowledge (more on this later) can human beings know him. They also despised a lesser so-called god who is the evil creator of this evil world called the universe and some of these gnostics equated this god with the God of the Old Testament. Concerning the Ancient Gnostic view of Reality the main thing to know is that the universe is dualistic- matter (anything physical or material) is evil and anything spiritual (non-material) is good. The created universe is meaningless.
  • We also looked at 1 Timothy1:3-7 and 2 Peter 2:1-3 to see some examples of early gnostic thought. I will provide more commentary on these passages later this week.
  • Folks, I want to encourage you to not become frustrated or discouraged with this material. As I stressed Sunday morning it will begin to come together once we get to the modern day manifestations and to the biblical apologetic or defense.

Two Good Blog Entries for "The Secret" by Al Mohler

"The Secret" Website: Modern Manifestation of Ancient Gnosticism

If any of you are interested in doing any research on "The Secret" here is their official website.

What We Are Covering Sunday 4/22

  • We will continue our look at the Ancient Gnostic worldview. Keep in mind that the purpose of us looking at the gnostic worldview is to better understand what they believed and why they believed it.
  • We will continue our look at more passages under section B. Ancient Gnosticism and the Biblical Content- 1 Timothy 1:3-7; 2 Peter 2:1-22; 1 John 1:1-4.
  • If time allows we will begin to look at some responses to Ancient Gnosticism from some of our courageous predecessors.

**I know the weekends are always busy for all of us but I encourage you, if you have the time, to take a look at the passages that we plan on covering for class Sunday. This will give you an opportunity to develop questions or comments for our time together in study.

What We Covered Last Sunday 4/16

  • We started a new series entitled "Ancient Heresy in Modern Times: A presentation of ancient Gnosticism, its modern manifestation and the Biblical apologetic."
  • Introductory Points: Ancient Gnosticism has made a comeback in many ways but the most well known route to the modern era has been seen in two top sellings books: "The Davinci Code" and "The Secret."
  • Introductory Quote by Albert Mohler: “You see, sometimes the church does not remember this, but it is the church’s responsibility to anathematize. That is something we don’t talk about very much, but it is the church’s responsibility clearly to declare as false anything which stands against the true gospel of Jesus Christ. We live in a harmonious age when everyone wants to nod at everything, smile appreciatively at everything, and not pass judgment on anything. In the midst of such an age, however, the church is called to say “no” and to identify the false as false. Otherwise we cannot truly honor the truth.
What we are experiencing now in the modern age is that the old heresies are coming up all over again. It is a bit like rewinding history, and all the ancient heresies that were tried long ago, opposed by the church, and declared by the church to be false, they are coming back.”
  • In this series we will look at these three main points: 1. The Ancient Gnostic Worldview
    2. The Modern Gnostic Manifestation 3. The Timeless Biblical Apologetic
  • We will examine the appropriate biblical texts each morning.
  • We looked at two definitions of "gnosticism": 1. “A theological error prevalent around the time of Christ. Generally speaking, Gnosticism taught salvation is achieved through special knowledge (gnosis). This knowledge usually dealt with the individuals relationship to the transcendent Being. It denies the incarnation of God as the Son. In so doing it denies the true efficacy of the atonement since, if Jesus is not God, He could not atone for all of mankind and we would still be lost in our sins.”
    2. “A movement in early Christianity, beginning already in the first century, which 1)emphasized a special higher truth that only the more enlightened receive from God, 2)taught that matter is evil, and 3)denied the humanity of Jesus.” Millard Erickson
  • We started looking at the first point- The Ancient Gnostic Worldview and we also examined some passages of Scripture that address an early form of this heresy.

Not Just Another Blog

As if cyber world needed another blog in an already over loaded blogosphere, here is an additional one but I hope to make this one worth our while. I thought that a blog would be a useful tool for at least five reasons: One, I can provide some supplemental material that will go along with whatever we might be studying. Two, I can provide you with links to helpful Bible study websites that could be beneficial in your own personal study or as you prepare for our study time together. Three, if anyone misses a Sunday they will be able to go to the blog and get caught back up. Fourth, I will be able to let you know what we will be covering the following Sunday in class. Five, it provides us with a place to have dialogue about our study, current issues, prayer requests, etc. I encourage everyone to utilize it as much as we can.
