Interpretation: What does the text mean?
Application: How does the text apply to the Church and to the believer?
1. Read 2 Timothy 4:1-5 at least twice.
2. Read at least two commentaries on 2 Timothy 4:1-5. I appreciate what John Calvin writes concerning how there will those who will not endure sound doctrine: "When they will not endure sound doctrine This means that they will not only dislike and despise, but will even hate, sound doctrine; and he calls it “sound (or healthful) doctrine,” with reference to the effect produced, because it actually instructs to godliness. In the next verse he pronounces the same doctrine to be truth, and contrasts it with fables, that is, useless imaginations, by which the simplicity of the gospel is corrupted."
3. How does this text apply to the Church and to the believer?
Study Questions:
- Do you think that Paul's call to Timothy to "preach the word" also goes out to the Church and to the believer?
- Has the "time" come that Paul refers to in verse 3?
- Do we find "ear ticklers" and an accumlation of teachers today? Provide some examples.
- What myth are people turning to today?
