Obervation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?
1. Read the introduction to 2 Peter in a Study Bible if you have one.
2. Read 2 Peter 2 all the way through at least once.
3. Read 2 Peter 2:1-11 through at least twice.
4. Focus in on verses 1-2 and do the following:
- Mark any key words/terms that you find. One example of a key word in verse 1 is "destructive heresies" which refers to decisive teachings that are contrary to biblical truth. These teachings have great destructive power.
- Look up the meanings key words/terms you found in verses 1-2. You might want to make your notes in a notebook.
- Mark any key verbs/verbal phrases noticing whether they are past, present, or future tense. One example of a key verbal phrase in verse 1 is "will secretly introduce". Peter seems to be not only looking at the present but also looking into the future.
5. Read 2 Peter 2:1-2 in at least two different Bible translations. I like the way the Good News translation renders verse 1: "False prophets appeared in the past among the people, and in the same way false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them, and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction."
6. Read at least two commentaries on verses 1-2. I like how the Jamieson, Fausset, Brown commentary defines the word "heresies"- "self-chosen doctrines, not emanating from God (compare "will-worship,"
