Daily Bible Study: Day Four- 2 Peter 2:7-8

Modern Gnosticism & The Timeless Apologetic: The Biblical Teaching Against False Teaching

Observation: What do I see in the text?
Interpretation: What does the text mean?

1. Read 2 Peter 2:1-11 at least twice.

2. Focus in on verses 7-8 and do the following:
  • Mark key words/terms that you found in verses 7-8. One example of a key word in verse 7 is the word describing the behavior or conduct of the degernates in Sodom and Gomorrah. Peter describes their behavior as being sensual which is quite literally referring to filthy living.
  • Look up the meanings of the key words/terms you found in verse 7-8.
  • Mark key verbs/verbal phrases in verses 7-8 noticing whether they are past, present, or future tense.

3. Read 2 Peter 2:7-8 in at least two different Bible translations. The Holman Christian Standard Bible rightly translates "sensual conduct" as "unrestrained behavior."

4. Read at least two different commentaries on 2 Peter 2:7-8. I appreciate something that William Barclay said concerning Lot's situation in Sodom. Barclay said "No man need to be the slave of the environment in which he happens to find himself."
